One evening a blind donkey lost his way in a thick wood . He did not know whether to go right or left . By good luck an owl was at hand and he offered to become the donkey’s guide . The owl , who can see well at night , led the donkey safely back to the road . The donkey felt very grateful to the owl and thought highly of the owl’s power to show him the way . He begged the owl to stay with him and be his guide during the day . The owl agreed . As proud as a lord he sat on the donkey’s back and the two friends started on their way . As the sun rose the owl began to turn blind . But he was too proud to give up his new post . ” Take care ” , he cried ” if you go to the left you will fall into a pond . ” Then donkey moved quickly to the right , fell over a cliff and was killed .

A blind donkey lost his way one evening in a forest . An owl that could see clearly at night , showed him the way out . In the morning the owl lost his vision . But the donkey followed his guidance still , fell over a cliff and killed .

A poor woman once came to Buddha to ask him whether he could give her any medicine to restore her dead child to life . The holy man touched by the great sorrow of the woman , told her that there was only one medicine which could revive her son . He bade her bring him a handful of mustard – seed from a house where death had never entered . The sorrowing mother went from door to door seeking the mustard – seed , but at every door she met with sad replies . One said , ” I have lost my husband . ” , Another said , ” our youngest child died last year . ” She returned with a heavy heart to the teacher and told him the result of her quest . Then Buddha told her tenderly that she must not think much of her own grief , since sorrow and death are common to all .
